I've started this post in my head at least a dozen times today. One year ago today we flew home from Guatemala after signing a power of attorney in the lobby of the Raddison, promising to do whatever it would take to bring our son home. We wondered how we would tell our family. How would we tell our friends. What would people think? Would our case be allowed to continue? Could we get a dossier together in time? So many questions. Yet, in the midst of it all, we had a deep-seated peace, knowing that God was in it and if God is for us, who can be against us?
If you had asked me then where we'd be today, I would have told you, with all confidence, that we would be preparing a Christmas for five beautiful children. Never would I have guessed that we'd still be stuck in the system.
Rumblings...preparations...pieces beginning to fall into place...
We learned last night that the investigations division (Minor's Court) has agreed to release our case back to PGN without going through a judge. Good news. Wonderful news. A beacon of hope as we pass this anniversary day without Geovanny at home. Not the first thing we've seen in the last few days that makes us wonder if our forever reunion with our sweet boy could be closer than we've dared to hope.
What's next? We really don't know. While they've agreed to send our dossier back to PGN, we don't know when that will actually happen. For all we know (our attorney is on vacation this week) it could have happened already. We pray that it has. There's still the issue of the document in question. Will we face a kick-out to get it fixed? Maybe. Or maybe, somewhere along the line, the problem has been solved and when PGN gets it back, they'll approve our case and release us. It's almost too much to ask for, but we ask anyways. Trusting that God knows what's best. Hoping for another miracle. Dreaming of a day we don't have to say good-bye to our son.
As we prepare to celebrate Christmas, the gift of God's Son to us, my thoughts turn to Mary, the mother of Jesus. I think of how conflicted her heart must have been as she prepared to give birth to the Messiah, knowing that He would not be hers forever. Knowing He would be scoffed and rejected. I'm challenged by her courage and her strength and her desire to serve God no matter what. May I be as willing as she was to say "I am the Lord's servant, and I am willing to accept whatever he wants. May everything you have said come true."

In Whom Do I Trust?
Today started off as one of those mornings where I just wanted an answer to this adoption craziness. All we've heard is that there has been no movement. No movement back towards PGN. No movement towards judicial review. No movement.
As Christmas approaches, I picture our son sitting in an orphanage, no decorations, no tree, no visible symbols of a celebration. But then another picture comes to mind, the picture of little boys sitting on the floor in front of a teen-age girl who is reading them a Bible story from a simple Spanish children's storybook. God nudges my heart. Isn't THAT what Christmas is about? Geovany may not see any visible signs of Christmas. He most likely won't receive any gifts. But he is hearing about the reason for the season.
As I questioned God, and began my reading for the morning, I came across this verse...
Isa 2:22 -- Stop putting your trust in mere humans. They are as frail as breath. How can they be of help to anyone?
I was challenged, once again, to remember that as wonderful as our attorney is, he is not the one in which we place our trust. As much as we appreciate all our agency has done for us, they are not the ones in whom we should be trusting. Our trust is in God alone. He has not forgotten Geovany. He has not forgotten us.
Isn't God gracious to continually meet us where we're at? To gently remind us that He understands. He doesn't condemn me for asking, but takes my hand and leads me back to truth my heart needs to hear.

A Vicious Circle
Well, we received an "update" on our case today. It's not real encouraging and we're not exactly sure what the solution will be . It appears that PGN has admitted that they were wrong in sending our case to investigations. They have said that the document which needed correction could have been corrected through administrative channels and the case should not have been turned over to the investigation division. The investigation division says there is nothing for them to investigate, as they've looked at the document and concur that it should be fixed administratively. Here's where it gets crazy. Because it was sent for investigation, by law, it has to be investigated. PGN is apparently not allowed to just get the case back. But since there's nothing to investigate, the investigators won't do anything with it!!! The "solution" being offered by investigations (I think) is to send it to a judge for him to rule on it. Once the judge rules on it, it would then be sent back to PGN to start all over. The biggest challenge to that "solution" is that it takes 6-8 months for the judge to rule on it and then an unknown additional amount of time to clear PGN. I know this is probably very confusing to you, it certainly is to us.
At this point, we're praying for some kind of miracle. Our attorney is trying to get the case back to PGN without going through the judicial system. God is going to have to show up and show off to make that happen. Amazingly, as I type this, I don't feel panicked or concerned or even frustrated. There's truly a peace that passes all understanding that covers our lives when we surrender to God's plan. That doesn't mean I don't want him home, but I have to remember that God is in this and none of this is a surprise to Him.
We look forward to God resolving this and will continue to keep you posted. Thanks again for hanging in there with us!
Blessings,
Psalm 135:13-14 -- Your name, O LORD, endures forever; your fame, O LORD, is known to every generation. For the LORD will vindicate his people and have compassion on his servants.

We're Home
We made it back, safe and sound. Samantha and I are heading out to get her brothers and sister in just a little while. She's been wandering around the house asking for them, so I know she'll be thrilled to see them.
I still can't quite put into words what happened at the orphanage. It was much harder than we had expected it to be. The good news in that is that Geovany really bonded with us and seems to undestand that we are different somehow. The prayers for God to connect our hearts across the miles seem to have been answered...a miracle that helps me as I pray for Geovany now. Our prayer is that he will not feel abandoned by us, but that God will place in his little spirit a hope and a knowledge that Mommy and Daddy are coming back for him.
Rob will be visiting him in January while he's in Guatemala for a Work & Witness trip with our church. I know the time between now and then will pass quickly. But my heart is still heavy today and I have questions that only God can answer. And right now, He choosing not to. And that's okay, but hard.
Thanks for praying us home and being part of our journey.

Hasta pronto...see you soon!

Tonight
Tonight, there just aren't words. We wouldn't trade this weekend for anything, but our hearts are sad knowing that tomorrow will be here all too soon. We are asking God for a miracle, trusting His grace is sufficient and praying for the strength to keep walking where He's asked us to go. We know that the prayers of our friends will carry us through the day, out to the orphanage and back home to our waiting family. Thank you so much for being part of this journey. For praying. For caring. For walking with us.

Hebrews 4:16 -- So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it.
Football Americano
This video is from our first day together. Geovany loves playing football with his Daddy. Lookds like Isabella Faye's Daddy was right, there could be a future in it for this "little" guy...or at least a college scholarship!! =)
Today we're off to the zoo. Hoping to meet up with Chris, Amy and Mya this morning. Maybe they'll be able to join us. We finally got a full night's sleep last night, so are feeling better today. Gevoany won't sleep in the crib or on the bed, but he loves sleeping on the floor. So, we've thrown the comforter from the bed down on the floor next to us and he sleeps well.
Our first day here, Rob took Geovany down to the lobby to talk with someone about our computer. Samantha was watching Dora, Diego and Boots and Mommy was happily knitting. All of the sudden, Samantha realized Daddy and "Banny" were gone. She jumped up, ran to the door, opened it and ran out. I jumped off the bed dashed into the hallway and didn't see her anywhere! The hotel staff was doing maintenance on the room next to ours, with the door open, and Samantha had ducked in there!! I heard her saying "Daddy, Daddy" and the maintenance guy saying "No, no, nina...no, no." Well, I quickly scooped her up, turned around and realized that the door to our room had closed...and I was without a key! So, Mantha and I headed down to the lobby in our stocking feet to get Daddy, and a new key as Daddy had left his in the room too! Needless to say, we now lock the top lock when we're in the room with Mantha and I keep a key in the pocket of my jeans at all times!!
Time to get ready for breakfast...more pictures later.

Day Two
This has been a day that I can't quite process yet. We've done so many things, spent time with old friends, and watched our son blossom. The changes we've seen just today are incredible. I think what's most amazing to me is that he seems to prefer us, somehow, he knows that we are his Mommy and Daddy. He was comfortable around our friends, but when it came to being held, wanted us to hold him. I can't even describe it. I know it has to be an answer to prayers we have prayed and so many of our friends have prayed...that somehow he would know who we were and God would connect our hearts across the miles.
We spent most of the day enjoying the fellowship of our friends, eating lunch, breaking a pinata, touring an incredible 3D map of Guatemala, venturing into downtown Guatemala to see the annual lighting of the gigantic Christmas tree...I will be processing all that's happened for some time. So, for now, enjoy the pictures and the videos.
Blessings,
Amy

Day One
Geovany is doing well. We picked him up at the REMAR offices instead of at the orphanage. We'd never been there before. It was interesting to see what goes on behind the scenes. By no coincidence, our attorney "just happened" to stop by while we were there. Not knowing it was him, we weren't introduced. Our translator, Sonia, had gone out to move her car, so we almost missed an incredible opportunity. However, when Sonia came back in she asked if we'd met our attorney. When we said no, she immediately had the social worker call him on his cell phone. He hadn't left the parking lot yet, so came back in to introduce himself. He assured us that he believes our case has about a 95% chance of completion, we just have to be patient. He also asked us to send photos of our visits with Geovany along with copies of our passport stamps and receipts from the Radisson proving we were here.
Geovany was a little unsure at first, we've had some tears, but McDonalds and naptime have helped greatly!! He's talking, which is an amazing thing to hear. I brought along Spanish board books from the library. He loves sitting in my lap, reading. He's said Mama and Dada and many other words I don't quite understand! =) After reading our first book several times, I asked for a kiss and got my first kiss on the cheek from our sweet boy. It's a pretty amazing thing to be so in love with someone you hardly know!
Enjoy the pictures.
Blessings,
Amy

A Visiting We Will Go!
When God is in charge, it's so amazing to sit back and just watch things happen. With the recent kick-out and the news that Geovany won't be home before the end of the year, we decided we really wanted to visit. God worked some pretty incredible miracles to make that possible, not the least of which was getting tickets for almost half of what we'd been seeing them going for. So, November 13th, we head to Guatemala with Samantha to visit Geovany for the weekend. To say we're looking forward to it would be a great understatement!
There are some specific ways you can pray for our trip:
- That everyone stays healthy and has safe travels
- For the "big" kids as they spend some fun time at Gma and Gpa's
- For us as we spend 4 precious days with Geovany...and as we return him, once again, to the orphanage on Monday the 17th
- For Samantha...we'll most likely be seeing her foster family...that this won't create any feelings of fear or insecurity for her
- That God might work one more miracle and allow us the opportunity to meet some of our adopting friends, whom we've met on this journey, in Guatemala...there's a good chance two families will be there picking up their children while we're visiting...we'd love to meet Beth & Isabella Faye and Amy & Mya
It's shaping up to be yet another adventure of a lifetime! Thanks for continuing to journey with us.

Sad News
We've been informed by our agency that Geovany won't be coming home this year. His case has not been kicked-out of PGN yet, but will be soon due to an error on a document. Apparently, from what we're being told, this is not an easy fix and will need to go through the public ministries, whatever that is! Not what we wanted hear, but we cling to what we know...that God is running this, this doesn't surprise Him and He's going to bring Geovany home.

Decisions, decisions, decisions...
Some of you have commented on the fact that I've recently started spelling Geovany's name differently. No, I haven't forgotten how to spell it, it really is intentional. When we first got his abandonment papers, we saw on there that his name was spelled "Geovany". That was a unique spelling to us. Because it wasn't what we were accustomed to seeing, we changed the spelling to "Giovanni". Something we were used to. Lately, I've been feeling like that wasn't the best decision. Our precious son is from Guatemala where they spell his name Geovany. Why wouldn't we want to honor that? Why would we respell his name to look like he's American or Italian?!?So, in light of all that, we've come back to the original spelling of his name. For some of you, it may take a while to get used to that. That's ok. It took me a while too!
There's no new news to report. Our agency director is back from Ethiopia, so we hope to be a little better informed now that she's in the office again. I did hear of two outs yesterday. Neither of them were cases registered with our agency. But, it sounds like PGN may be moving, slowly.
I've been reading some posts lately that have stirred my heart to find joy in saying "It is enough." I cannot begin to express how much peace I have found. Maybe because I'm being more intentional and specific in my thanks to my Father. Recognizing exactly what I have been given. Maybe because I am learning again how to rest in Him. Maybe because I am becoming more at home with His plan for my life. Embracing today and all that I've been given, I am thankful and I can say, with all my heart, "It is more than enough." Take the time to read her posts, I think you'll be encouraged as well.
Blessings,
Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. -- Psalm 91:1

Our Dream
Another week without news. Ugh! We've heard rumors that PGN's computers are down and they are not releasing cases because they cannot log them out of the system. Crazy, crazy, crazy! I'm willing to send my computer-techie husband and our home computer to Guatemala. Maybe he can fix the problem! If not, he can certainly get them a pen and a piece of paper to start handwriting a case log!!
Enjoy your weekend. Thanks for continuing to check in on us!

When You Can't See His Hand, Trust His Heart
All day long, the lyrics to this song have been running through my head.
Trust His Heart
Written by: Babbie Mason and Eddie Carswell
All things work for our good
though sometimes we can’t see how they could.
Struggles that break our hearts in two
sometimes blind us to the truth.
Our Father knows what’s best for us;
His ways are not our own.
So, when your pathway grows dim,
and you just can’t see Him,
Remember He’s still on the throne.
God is too wise to be mistaken.
God is too good to be unkind.
So when you don’t understand,
when you don’t see His plan,
When you can’t trace His hand, trust His heart.
He sees the Master plan.
He holds the future in His hands.
So don’t live as those who have no hope.
All our hope is found in Him.
We walk in present knowledge,
but He sees the first and the last.
And like a tapestry, He’s weaving you and me
to someday be just like Him.
God is too wise to be mistaken.
God is too good to be unkind.
So when you don’t understand,
when you don’t see His plan,
When you can’t trace His hand, trust His heart.
He alone is faithful and true
He alone knows what is best for you.
God is too wise to be mistaken.
God is too good to be unkind.
So when you don’t understand,
when you don’t see His plan,
When you can’t trace His hand, trust His heart.
That pretty much says it all. I don't understand, but I trust His heart.

Will it be Today?
In anticipation of good news this week, I was looking back through pictures from our trip in January. Time is such a relative thing. When I think of the last 8 months and having Samantha home, they've seem to have gone by so quickly. Yet, when I think of Giovanni, it seems like forever since we've seen him. I believe that God is working even now to bring Giovanni's case out of PGN. I am on pins and needles, excitedly waiting to hear what God has been doing.
I came across this picture of our handsome boy. I don't think I've shared it, so thought I'd post it. I'm sure he looks much different now than he did then. I can hardly wait to see him, to bring him home, to introduce him to our precious friends who have prayed and prayed and prayed. I know you will love him! Until then...

9 Months Ago Today
Nine months ago we saw our first pictures and video of Giovanni. We were sitting in Sue's hotel room mulling through hundreds of pictures and hours of video tape trying to determine if God really wanted us to do this one more time and if so, which one of these boys was our son? I'll never forget seeing pictures and video of Vanni. They tugged at my heart, but not in a way that was different from any of the pictures of the other little boys. I looked at Rob, not really sure if Vanni was "the one". My husband, with tears in his eyes asked me "Do you want to know what I think?" I smiled, as if to say, of course. He continued "That little boy needs a dad, and I'm his Dad." That sealed it for me. At that moment I knew that God was indeed asking us to bring one more child into our home and that Giovanni was that child. Nine months later, I still believe that. The fact that the dream hasn't been realized yet doesn't change anything.
Today is Guatemala Independence Day, so PGN is closed. Every fiber of my being prays that this week we will hear we are out of PGN approved. In the meantime, I look back at where we were nine months ago and just smile. What a great and wonderful God we serve! The things He orchestrated to get us to Guatemala, to place Sue there at that time, to secure a dossier, to get us registered in time...the list goes on and on. It's a good reminder to me of all God has done and will continue to do. He is Faithful!
Blessings,
Deu 7:9
Understand, therefore, that the LORD your God is indeed God. He is the faithful God who keeps his covenant for a thousand generations and constantly loves those who love him and obey his commands.
Deu 32:4
He is the Rock; his work is perfect. Everything he does is just and fair. He is a faithful God who does no wrong; how just and upright he is!
Isa 30:18
For the LORD is a faithful God. Blessed are those who wait for him to help them.

The Wait Continues
We got the encouraging news that our case is still in PGN. Recent timelines suggest about a 7 week PGN time, which is where we will be Monday. But, if I've learned nothing else through the journey of international adoption, I've learned that timelines mean absolutely nothing!! That being said, we continue to wait. Thank you for continuing to remember our family and our precious little boy in your prayers. I'm including some of my favorite verses, as a reminder to me that God is still at work and has not forgotten about us.
Blessings,
Habakkuk 2:3 -- But these things I plan won't happen right away. Slowly, steadily, surely, the time approaches when the vision will be fulfilled. If it seems slow, wait patiently, for it will surely take place. It will not be delayed.
Isaiah 64:4 -- For since the world began, no ear has heard, and no eye has seen a God like you, who works for those who wait for him!
Hebrews 11:1 -- What is faith? It is the confident assurance that what we hope for is going to happen. It is the evidence of things we cannot yet see.

Still In...
Last night, we heard some encouraging news from our agency. Our agency director spoke with our attorney yesterday regarding our case. The attorney says that for some reason abandonment cases are taking longer to be released than relinquishment cases. But, the good news is, we haven't been kicked-out again. We were resubmitted to PGN 4 weeks and 2 days ago. Our previous kick-outs have all come within 3 weeks of being resubmitted. I'm hoping that since we've made it past the 3 week mark, we won't get kicked-out again. I know it's not much to hold on to, but we hold on to what we can these days!! =) My husband is quick to remind me that each day brings us one day closer.
I heard something on Focus on the Family this week that has just stuck with me. Stephen Curtis Chapman was sharing about what his family has gone through since the death of their daughter, Maria Sue. Someone sent him a card with a statement that went something like this..."Maria is a greater part of your future than she was of your past." I have hung on to that this week. Our prayer is that Giovanni will not only be a part of our life here on Earth, but a part of our life in eternity. And if so, just think of all the time we will have to share. We've said it before and we'll say again, our hope rests in God, the One who started us on this journey. We eagerly anticipate what He will do as He continues to grow and mold and shape our family.

Happy Birthday
It happened on Friday, our little boy turned 2. When we began this journey in December, I had every intention of having him home by now. And if I was in control, he would be here. But I'm not in control, and in all honesty, the Guatemalan government is not in control, God is in control of this adoption. So, I have to trust that He knows what He's doing.
Friday was one of the hardest days yet. We were privileged to be at our church's family camp, surrounded by people who love us and pray for us. Friday morning, I sat in the back with Samantha, listening to the speaker talk about the importance of blessing others. How critical it is to step outside ourselves and our problems and take a moment to just bless someone else. He challenged us to do that at that moment, not to wait and put it off, but to step out and just bless someone. Samantha was sleeping, the tears were streaming down my face, and then someone I didn't even know came alongside me and laid his hand on my head and just prayed. At that moment, I knew that God was smiling down on our precious son in Guatemala. As I felt the breeze blow across my face, I was reminded that that same breeze would blow across the face of our son thousands of miles away. I was washed with peace. My faith and trust were renewed. I know that the road ahead still holds bumps and turns that I may not even be able to imagine, but I also know that God will, in His time, bring Giovanni into our family forever!
Then, today, I was scanning through the blogs of friends and came across an entry from my dear friend Kelly, who had not forgotten that it was Giovanni's birthday. I am overcome with emotion as I think of her stepping outside of all her own challenges, and taking the time to post and pray for Giovanni. I know that it is the prayers of our friends that carry us through this. Kelly, thank you for listening to God and obeying, for carrying some of my pain. We are so blessed.
Blessings,
James 5:16 -- The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and wonderful results.

In Again, Out Again, In Again...
Oops...forgot to post that we're back in PGN again. Our attorney successfully met with PGN and was able to resubmit our case on July 28th. So now, we wait some more. Giovanni will be 2 on Friday. Yet another chance for me to surrender to God's plan as I had really expected to have our son home by now. Thanks for continuing to journey with us.
Blessings,
Jude 1:20 -- But you, dear friends, must continue to build your lives on the foundation of your holy faith. And continue to pray as you are directed by the Holy Spirit.

Kicked-Out Again =(
It appears that our case has been kicked-out of PGN once again. Not sure why. Our agency says it's for something unnecessary and that our attorney is meeting with PGN today to discuss our case. Please pray that he has success with them and that our case is resubmitted and approved soon.

Back In!
We received the AMAZING news that Giovanni's case went back in to PGN yesterday. We truly did not expect to see that happen this quickly. Still no idea of how long this process will continue to take, but completely confident that God is at work and will complete this adoption, in His time. Thank you for partnering with us in prayer. We so appreciate the prayers and support of our friends.

A Previo!
We just learned that Giovanni's case was kick-out of PGN on a previo last Friday. There appears to be a problem with his original birth certificate. The attorney has notified the orphanage and they are already working on it. Our agency thinks it should only be a few weeks at the most until we're back in PGN. Without a huge miracle, it would appear that we just lost having him home for his birthday in August. This is by far the hardest part of the news, but we believe God has a plan and a perfect time to bring our son home. Pray for our hearts as we digest this news.
Blessings,
Psa 37:5 -- Commit everything you do to the LORD. Trust him, and he will help you.

Tail Tingles
Yesterday, I had the overwhelming feeling that I needed to praying for Giovanni. Rob calls it a tingle in my tail (from Over the Hedge). I commented to several of my friends that I just couldn't stop praying for Giovanni and for several of the other cases currently in-process with our agency. I really had the feeling that God was poised to move. That He's about done waiting for Guatemala and is ready to bring these children home.
Today, we got an email from our agency director. The interview scheduled for last week didn't take place. Instead, our orphange director was interviewed yesterday. The e-mail simply says it went well. What a relief to have that step behind us. Thank you for all your continued prayers on behalf of our precious son. We look forward to bringing him home so you can meet him!
Blessings,
Rom 1:9 -- God knows how often I pray for you. Day and night I bring you and your needs in prayer to God

Tomorrow
We just learned that tomorrow the orphanage director will be interviewed by PGN regarding Giovanni's case. We have very few concerns about the interview, but would appreciate your prayers.
We have no idea what this means as far as timelines go. No one really knows how PGN is working right now. But we are encouraged that there is progress and movement.
We'll keep you posted!
Blessings,
